What is the best type of mask to wear

There has been quite a lot of research done regarding the type of mask that works best.  Some are not very effective, but even a “bad” one helps to some degree.

Here is a link to a video on CNN showing how researchers have tested the efficacy of a variety of masks.  They remind us that continued research has shown that wearing a mask not only protects others, but the wearer as well.

Possible vaccine for Covid-19

There have been quite a few developments in the research on the effects of Covid-19.  The news that a potential vaccine has been developed by Pfizer is excellent news, but there is a way to go before it’s ready for dissemination.  Meanwhile, here’s an article about Pfizer’s vaccine and its implications:

Possible vaccine

As many scientists and commentators have repeatedly made clear, the vaccine is not with us yet and to mitigate the effects of the second wave of coronavirus it remains vital that people continue to do the three basic steps required to keep themselves and others as safe as possible, wear a mask, wash your hands for at least 20 seconds and keep your distance!

Contracting Covid-19 a second time

Here’s an interesting and concerning article about someone who contracted Covid-19 twice.  Unfortunately, the second attack was far more serious.  This article discusses what happened and the likely consequences.

The article also serves as a crucial reminder that getting the disease, whether a milder or more serious attack, does not mean you are immune ever after.  There have been more cases reported of people being reinfected.

So again, to avoid getting it at all (let alone twice), remember to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds, wear a mask when in populated areas and keep your distance!!

Covid symptoms – what are they and how do I protect myself?

Back in September, the BBC posted an informative article about what symptoms to look out for with regard to Covid-19 and how to tell the difference between coronavirus and either the flu or a cold.

It’s not straightforward, as you’ll see, but it helps. They list the  symptoms of Covid-19 that occur most often as well as showing a table comparing the three illnesses.

Remember, the three basic rules are still the most important:

  1. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  2. Wear a mask when going shopping or in more populated areas
  3. Keep your distance from people – 2 meters is still the best

Coronavirus vaccine efficacy face mask variolation theory

Autumn has come around again – leaves are turning and the temperature is getting decidedly cooler.  In many countries, it looks as if we’ll be having a rather bleak winter thanks to the coronavirus.

As Covid-19 shows no sign of diminishing, we have a link to an article that addresses yet again just how vital it is to wear a mask to prevent the spread of the virus as well as to lessen the effects of the disease should you end up getting it after all.  The masks may even be able to help to lessen the effects of the virus in others.  This article explores the implications.

Why many people underestimate the dangers of coronavirus

There was a short hiatus since our last post.  As a consequence, the interesting articles have piled up!  Rather than overwhelm you, we’ll do one today, another one Monday and more a few days after that.

This article concerns the concern that many people do not understand the principle of exponential growth.  It’s an invaluable concept to be able to comprehend with regard to the spread of Covid-19, and this article explains it clearly.

Should you have a flu jab this year? Yes!!

Apologies to our friends from abroad, but the article we’re sharing a link to this week is targeted at UK residents.  It concerns this year’s flu jab and why it’s important to have one.

Mind you, the principle is actually relevant for everyone around the world, but this article specifies who the UK government has said can have them for free, when and how.

We strongly recommend that regardless of whether you don’t fall into any of the mentioned groups or do fall into the 50 to 64-year-olds group, you go ahead and book an appointment for a flu jab absolutely as soon as possible.  The chances of a shortage of vaccines are pretty high.

So get yourself inoculated if you can.

Care during & after hospitalisation due to Covid-19

This week we’d like to share a link to an article that is about three weeks old, but extremely relevant.  We deal in PPE, but what happens when this dangerous virus attacks despite all precautions?  This article is about the care given to those who become so very ill with Covid-19 – both while in hospital and afterwards.

Amongst other things, it is certainly a stark reminder of how important it is to wear PPE.

To this end, we’ve added another link this week – the correct procedure for putting on and taking off PPE.  It’s certainly worth a look.

Covid-19 – a personal story

This week we’d like to share an article we found online at LA Times.  It’s by a columnist who usually reports on sports.  This time, it’s about his experience of having a “mild” case of Covid-19.

It serves as a serious reminder to continue to remain on your guard when it comes to interacting with others.  The virus doesn’t care how careful you usually are.  It doesn’t discriminate between those who are usually careful and those who are not.  It’s there, it hits, that’s it.

So please be careful and continue to adhere to the basic guidelines of hand-washing, social distancing and WEARING YOUR MASK!
